Keeping your house warm throughout the winter months is essential for well being, but what else can you do to give your property that all important sense of comforting cosiness?

A roaring open log fire will warm the heart as well as the hands, but if that is too much work then an enamelled wood burning stove will provide both warmth and style. In fact timber or timber effects will add texture and a snug element to any interiors. Wood furniture, as well as woven materials such as wicker, rattan or willow, will impart depth and earthy character to a room. You can even create the impression of wood with ceramic wood effect tiles or wallpapers featuring reclaimed wood planks. Wooden panelling is another great way to introduce a snug element to a room – use either traditional panels or reclaimed linear wooden planks.

Textiles are a versatile quick win in the snuggly stakes. Soft woollen blankets, silky cashmere throws, plaid rugs and tweed upholstery all go far in maintaining a comforting ambience. Layer sofas with throws and cushions in all shapes and sizes – mix up chunky knitted cushion covers with ones made with felt, fake fur, velvet and coarse woollen weaves. The idea is to create interest and movement, as well as depth and character.

Autumn colours are fabulous for helping create a feeling of warmth and Mother Nature should be the first port of call for inspiration. Look out for rich shades of red, blackcurrant and raspberry and mix them up with greys, lilacs and pale rose pinks. You could also try greens teamed with rich saffron and ochre yellows, as well as sophisticated burnt orange.

A living flame, no matter how small, will bring an interior to life. So if you can’t accommodate an open fire, softly glowing candlelight is a perfect way to add both warmth and scent. Candles draw a room together and are readily available in the high street, as well as supermarkets. Tealights look terrific lined up on windowsills and in fireplaces. While lanterns can be placed in alcoves or on stairways.

Let metallic accessories bring a magical touch to your personal spaces with warming copper and brass lamps, which will add depth and shine, helping to bounce light around the room, but in a subtle way. Use metal trays or plates beneath candles to maximise the effect of flickering flames.
